Pada saat perencanaan kota (Bouwplan) ke tujuh tahun 1935 dibangunlah pacuan kuda terbesar di seluruh Jawa Timur (sekarang terbentang sepanjang Jalan Ijen mulai depan Gereja Ijen sampai dengan Bundaran Simpang Balapan). Tahun 1936 pernah digunakan sebagai tempat diselenggarakannya Jambore Kepanduan se-Dunia yang dihadiri puluhan peserta dari Luar Negeri.
